Being Genuine

This Mormon Message really hit home with me. It made me think about something I've been thinking about a lot lately.

Am I genuine?
Do I do things for the right reason?
Am I denying myself blessings by doing things grudgingly?
Should I "put on a grin and bear it" or is that kind of lying to myself?

I'm not sure I can answer all of those questions.

Watching this Mormon Message made me realize something, when we "put on a grin and bear it" our hearts begin to change. President Boyd K. Packer said, "The study of the doctrines of the gospel will improve behavior quicker than a study of behavior will improve behavior." The doctrines of the gospel teach us to love one another and to serve our fellow men, to be more Christlike (among other things).
When we put on that grin we may be acting, but then after a while our hearts can change and we are no longer acting, we are grinning because we actually are enjoying ourselves.

Just like the man in the video. He started out doing it because we felt obligated,
but then he realized that he had the wrong attitude.
He stepped back,
he re-evaluated his priorities,
he changed his heart,
and he came to love serving the woman with MS.

I believe this pattern can help us change our hearts with anything in our lives that we struggle with.

I have an example from my life.
I know a person,
I had a really hard time liking this person.
In fact, I had a hard time talking to this person
because every conversation ended with me either frustrated, crying, or annoyed.
But then I realized I was being ridiculous.
I was judging this person because of things that had happened a long time ago.
I decided to let those things go.
I realized this person was generally nice to me,
I was the one being rude.
I took a step back,
I changed my heart (it took a long time),
and now I enjoy spending time with this person.

Maybe you have someone in your life that you need to forgive or that you have a hard time with, maybe this can help you. Maybe you have a church calling that is difficult and you don't feel like giving it the time and energy it deserves (or maybe that is just me). Maybe you are experiencing a trial and you don't know how to overcome it. Maybe you are just struggling with yourself. Whatever your case may be, I think when we take a step back and try to approach it at a different angle we can learn something, we can improve.

I've been reading/listening to the book Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World that Can't Stop Talking, it is our book club book this month (technically I chose it, but someone suggested it about a year ago and we didn't end up reading it but it seemed really interesting, so it was my turn to choose, so I chose it). I'm still not quite sure whether I'm an extrovert or an introvert, I think I have a bit of both, but it has been really interesting to read because it has made me realize how I can improve when interacting with certain people. The book talks about recognizing the differences in people and not seeing them as a bad thing, but rather using those differences to help us grow and learn from one another. So rather than letting someone or something bother us, we can learn from other people's strengths and people can learn from our strengths.

Learning and thinking about these things has really contributed to my genuine puzzle. Another piece to my puzzle is the talk by President Dieter F. Uchdorf, "On Being Genuine."It's super good, I definitely recommend it! One of my favorite examples he gives is about the Potemkin Villages in the 18th century. To summarize, Catherine the Great of Russia was going to visit these villages, the governor wanted impress her so he put these fake pasteboard facades of shops and buildings with happy, hard working people all along the river that Catherine was floating down. These fake facades were covering the rundown shops and poor and desolate people that actually lived in the village. Since then "Potemkin Villages" is a term that refers to when we are trying to look better than we actually are. President Uchdorf talks about different aspects in our lives when we try to look better than we are: our personal life, our church callings, etc. Then he asks us "Why we do the things we do?" Sometimes we do the things we do because we want to appear better than we are, but sometimes we also do the things we do because we want to. Either way, President Uchdorf tells us, "the good news is that you can build on whatever strength you have."

I think that answers my question!
Even if we start doing something because we supposed to or because we feel obligated or whatever the case may be, I think we get some credit for actually doing it. The doing it is strength, if we build on that strength and start doing because we want to not just because we have to, that shows we are improving! We are on our way to genuinely doing it for the right reasons.
So I don't think we are lying to ourselves by putting on a grin and bearing it,
I think we are allowing ourselves to build on the strength we have.
As we build on the strength our hearts change,
as our hearts change we become genuine in our efforts,
and we do the things we do for the right reasons.

PS I hope that all made sense, if not, it helped me to work it out..
but I hope that maybe it helped someone else too.
PPS I am in no way perfect at this, I am still learning. For my one example I have about a billion others where I need to improve. But that's the great thing, every day we get to try again!

Yikes Bikes!

We got to try out the baby bike seat.
It was a hit!
Sweet Girl loved it.. despite the indifferent face she has in the picture above.
The one below shows a hint of a smile.
I really like the front seat because I know that she is there and I can tell if she is freaking out or not.
She was pretty calm the entire ride,
at first she didn't show much emotion but then we started to go a little faster because we were on a flat stretch and she started grunting and spitting (which in Sweet Girl lingo means she loves it!)!
We decided to wait and try it out as a family in case I needed help since I wasn't quite sure if I would be able to stop and start by myself with the seat in the way,
but it went really well!
Tuesday we even ventured out by ourselves!
Sweet Girl just looks so stinking cute in her little helmet!
Shout out to my Sweet Husband for the great birthday gift!

PS for those that want to know it is a Thule RideAlong Mini Bike Seat.

Mother's Day

 Grateful.
That's what I felt this Mother's Day.
Grateful for the blessing of being a mother.
Grateful for my mom and for my mother-in-law.
Grateful for our Grandmothers.
Grateful for our aunts, sisters, cousins, friends.
Grateful to my Father in Heaven, for giving us such a precious gift.
Grateful for the knowledge that those I know who long to be a mother will be a mother someday!
I still love what my Sweet Husband wrote to me one mother's day,
"As a daughter of God you have always been
and will always be a mother."
Grateful for the Lord's timing, it really is the best.

My Birthday Week!

I love my birthday!
I'm sure I've said that before.
I have a twin cousin, we were born on the same day and always had fun celebrating our birthdays together, complete with matching shirts that we wore every year in high school!

We were lucky and got to spend the weekend before with both sides of our family!
I love that they get along so well!
Some of us got a tour of my Sweet Husband's new workplace!
It was really neat but they don't allow pictures,
and we forgot to take one outside the building.
But it was really neat and his coworkers were so nice!

The rest of the weekend we enjoyed the wonderful company, nice weather, and played outside,
 ate outside,
went repelling (these are the people that weren't repelling, the actual repelling area wasn't super kid friendly, so we took turns),

 playing in the dirt,
 riding bikes,
 opening birthday gifts
(a bike seat and a helmet for Sweet Girl! we are super excited to go on family bike rides!),
and eating our favorite chocolate cheesecake.
On my actual birthday we went to dinner as a family to my favorite restaurant in our town.
Sweet Girl sat in a restaurant high chair for the first time, she loved it!
She danced to the music in the restaurant, it was hilarious!
We went pretty early so it wasn't too crowded, which was super nice.
The food was delicious!
I love my Sweet Husband and Sweet Girl!
Lol, I take the pictures I can get these days...lol.
It was a great birthday week! I am so blessed to have such wonderful people in my life!
I love you all!

"It's my birthday week, it's supposed to be a season of peace..." quote from one of my favorite shows.
Anyone know what it is? My sisters can't guess.. lol! Just kidding, they can.

8 Months!

This is a few days late, but our Sweet Girl is 8 months old!
We tried taking pictures the day she turned 8 months old, but we were having a hard time focusing...lol!
They were super cute, don't get me wrong, but I wanted at least one with her ADORABLE smile!

This one is my favorite from that day, it shows her sweetness.
 We tried again yesterday.
The lighting was better and she was in a better mood!
This girl just won't stop growing!
According to my super reliable home measurements,
she is 17 lbs, 26 inches long, and her head circumference is 18 inches.
She is a mover and shaker!
She army crawls and she is SO quick!
For a while she wouldn't leave the rug because she couldn't move very well on our wood floors,
but now she can get just about anywhere she wants, carpet or not!
 She love LOVE loves books!
She can turn the pages and it is probably one of the cutest things ever!
And you better make sure you only have it ready for her to turn when it's time or it is on to the next page, and if you don't have it ready when she thinks it's time to turn, she'll close the book... lol!
So we read at double speed sometimes.. lol!
 Those cheeks!
This is her adorable smile I was hoping for!
Some of the other milestones we hit this month: feeding herself, she can pick up cheerios and put them in her mouth. It is so amazing to me that one day she won't be able to do something and then the next day she'll be able to do it a little bit, and then the next day it's as if she's been doing it all her life!
We can put her hair in a pony! I am super excited about that! It just looks so darn cute, it is the tiniest little pony but SO cute!
She wears 6-9 or 9 month clothing, size 3 diapers.
She eats solids about two to three times a day.
She loves all the solids we've tried, except rice cereal.
Some of her favorites are pears, cheerios, rice rucks (rice cracker things), green beans (not pureed, she will eat them pureed but prefers the real thing), applesauce, chicken and rice (pureed), oatmeal, and bread!
She waves now! It is so cute! Sometimes it's an up and down wave and sometimes it's horizontal and looks like she's either casting a spell or leading the music... lol!
She also spits and vibrates her tongue (I can't figure out what that is called), she thinks it's hilarious...
and it is!
She also laughs all the time, sometimes she fake laughs, and sometimes she laughs because other people are laughing, it's pretty awesome!

Grammy!

A few weeks ago we got to spend a wonderful day with our sweet Grammy!
We started the day at the happiest place on earth,
we took turns with Sweet Girl.
My Sweet Husband is a champ and got Sweet Girl to sleep,
so she slept through most of my turn with her.
After a stop and some traffic,
we made to Grammy's house!
We had a great time with the Birthday Girl!
Sweet Girl cuddled right up to the Birthday Girl!
It was SO sweet!
We talked and played for the afternoon!
And enjoyed a box of chocolate covered strawberries someone sent her!
It was so fun to spend time with her and listen to her hilarious stories!
We sure love Grammy!
I love this series of pictures, it looks like she's talking to her Daddy
and then he's talking to her (lol, he's making funny faces not yelling)
and then she cuddles up to him!
Sweet Girl zonked out on the drive home.
PS We love all our grandparents :)

Goals

At the beginning of the year I blogged about some of my goals. Since I actually accomplished one of my goals, I figured I would blog about that too!

One of my goals was to exercise more regularly. Obviously that is not one that I can really say is finished, but my Sweet Husband and I have been working out together and that has really helped me! My Sweet Husband really likes running. I ran track in high school.. but I am not a runner. I pretty much hated running. But I've realized that I don't mind it when I run with my Sweet Husband and when we are not running on a track. We've been running from our house to the park near by, around their walking path, and back home. The first time I walked more than half of it, that day I set a goal to run the entire route by the end of the year. It's two miles. Not a lofty goal, but keep in mind, I hated running. A few weeks ago I did it! And we've done it since too, the second time wasn't as bad as the first either! YAY!

The first time I ran the entire way!

Springtime

It's Spring!
I love Spring!
Spring also means it's time for camp fundraisers for church.
The Scouts did a pancake breakfast and the Young Women are going to do a yard sale this weekend.

I've been in an organizing mood,
I have to take advantage of those moods because I'm super sentimental and have a hard time getting rid of stuff. So when I feel like organizing and purging, I jump on it! The yard sale was a good reason to go through stuff and since I was in the purging mood, I organized our office.
Sweet Girl is really helpful! She cracked me up, she LOVED playing with the garbage pile and tearing the paper and such!
Sweet Girl loved the pancakes at the pancake breakfast,
yummy dry pancakes... lol!
My Sweet In-Laws came up after the breakfast and spent the rest of the weekend with us!
It was really fun!
We talked and ate Saturday night
and then Sunday morning we went on a nice walk before Church!
We also enjoyed watching the planes in the sky!
 Sweet Girl loves walks!
